An American in Paris

An American in Paris:An exhibition of drawing and writing

NOW And AGAIN Gallery, Brighton, June 2014

Now and Again presents an exhibition of drawing and flash fiction. To break out an art historical term, our premise has been ‘au premier coup’, at first attempt, in one go. As a technique, it has been around since the invention of oils. But as an attitude, it connects then with now.

It evokes the moment of freedom and free expression; a day in the nineteenth century studio of émigré painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Find him setting aside his earnest portrait commission, picking up his brush, free from constraint, completing the painting at first attempt. Au premier coup.

The gallery has asked artists and writers to respond to this term ‘premier coup’ in their own way, in two specific mediums - drawing is the embodiment of first impression. Short short fiction may take several revisions but the readerly hit is instant.
